If you look close, you can see a litte scribble Leaf made on the left of the drawing...

I'm about a week behind in topics, because once I come up with an idea, it takes me a week to draw it and upload. Still trying to come up with a portfolio plan. I tried making a category in this blog, but I don't think it works that well. I may need two blogs? or just a special page....

Also, I want sort of a political cartoon home page with links to the cartoon blog, portfolio, and maybe a bio?

Back to using the Artline pens and much happie with the result. The drawings lately are a bit simple, but I'm just trying to get back to doing caricatures.

A generic cartoon, that likely could have been drawn anytime in the last three years... I notice a lot of cartoonists throw these into the mix, and some seeme to specialize in them (Clay Bennet)... The news lately has been full of natural disasters and it is hard to find something to poke fun of. A few cartoonist did manage to capture the irony of existence when tens of thousands of people are dying in other parts of the world. Mike Keefe did a nice one of a Job-like guy pleading to nature (5/15 at http://www.intoon.com/index.cfm)... a little to direct for me, but at least the guy made an effort. Another cartoon, can't remember who drew it, had a picture of the earth with a bunch of band-aids, which I thought was sort of clever.

I'm starting to like the bold, brush tip now... it takes a little more prudence, but I like the effects when it is used sparingly (used in Uncle Sam's jacket above). I'm avoiding doing the PS masks until I get better control of my own shading. I ordered some Artlines, which has been my favorite pens so far, and will dump the Fabers as soon as they come in.

Okay, so my drawing sucks lately (I blame it on the pens), and my PS skills are still not up to snuff, but I'm starting to get some momentum/consistency again, which is a big deal. Also, I've started reading cartoons online again, and think I can approach this form/media/whatever from a slightly different angle.

I added Michael Ramirez to my list of fav cartoonists. His art is well, highly polished, but also, he often comes up with clever symbolism... So far, I regularly check the following cartoonists out: Matt Davies, Mike Lester, Mr. Fish, Ann Telnaes, Mike Keefe, and now Michael Ramirez. I think this is a good group for me... yet, even with these people in mind, I believe I can produce a different sort of message. Unsure exactly what that is.
